Pathological anatomy

Pathological anatomy is dedicated to the macro and microscopic analysis of biopsies obtained during medical procedures, both in the operating room and in various specialized consultations within the clinic, such as dermatology, gynecology, maxillofacial, digestive, otorhinolaryngology, among others. In addition to these biopsies, intraoperative studies are also performed during surgery, where the pathologist provides a diagnosis that guides the surgeon’s decisions in real time (known as intraoperative biopsies).

Furthermore, pathological anatomy is responsible for the study of cytologies from effusions and punctures, with gynecological cytologies being the most frequent, particularly for cervical cancer screening.

Finally, necropsies (autopsies) are also conducted on fetuses with malformations or other diseases who were stillborn before delivery, in order to determine the causes of death.
